Newquay Strategic Route (NSR)

The Newquay Strategic Route project is set to transform local infrastructure, providing a vital new road link through Duchy of Cornwall land. This ambitious development includes significant bridge infrastructure spanning a river and railway line, aimed at improving connectivity and easing traffic congestion in Newquay.

Duchy of Cornwall: A Key Partner in Development

The Duchy of Cornwall, with its extensive land holdings of over 52,000 hectares across 20 counties, plays a crucial role in this project. By facilitating the construction on their land, the Duchy demonstrates its commitment to sustainable regional development and community growth.

Bridge Infrastructure: Engineering Excellence

The project’s bridge infrastructure comprises several critical elements:

  • Bebo Arch Strip Footings
  • VSL wall foundations
  • Formwork design and installation
  • Rebar fixing and concrete placing

Recent progress includes the installation of seven pre-cast concrete BEBO arches over a watercourse feeding into the River Gannel, along with pre-cast concrete VSoL wall panels forming a causeway on either side.

Collaborative Effort

FINAN Formworks worked in collaboration with Cormac & Mace as the project main contractor & client representative to bring together the specific engineering design as well as labour & equipment resources required around the formwork solutions, in order to execute the delivery of the bridge civil structures. Delivery of the combined solution needed to meet the stringent programme, quality & safety metrics set for the project.

Project Timeline and Scope

The Newquay Strategic Route is scheduled to open in Summer 2024, connecting the Nansledan development to the A392 at Hendra roundabout. The finished route will feature wide footpaths for pedestrians and cyclists, promoting sustainable transport options.

Environmental and Community Benefits

The project goes beyond road construction, incorporating:

  • A new bus link for eastern Newquay
  • Creation of wetlands habitat with man-made ponds
  • An ecologically important green corridor for walking and cycling

Economic Impact

This strategic development is expected to:

  • Alleviate traffic pressure on neighboring communities
  • Boost local businesses in Nansledan
  • Support the creation of 4,000 new homes and a similar number of jobs

Conclusion

The Newquay Strategic Route project represents a significant step forward in improving local infrastructure. By addressing traffic congestion, promoting sustainable travel, and supporting economic growth, this development is poised to enhance the quality of life for residents and visitors alike, marking a new chapter in Newquay’s development.
