Marston Box

Introduction to the Marston Box Project

The Marston Box project stands as a testament to modern engineering and construction innovation. This ambitious undertaking involved constructing a massive 12,000-ton reinforced concrete rail bridge, which was then slid into place across a major highway during a weekend shutdown. As part of the Midlands link of the HS2 high-speed rail network, this project was both challenging and rewarding.

Initial Project Enquiry and Appointment

When we first received the project requirements from our client, MPB Structures, our initial reaction was one of awe at the scale and complexity of the task ahead. The opportunity to be part of such a groundbreaking project was thrilling for us at Finan Formworks. We were appointed to provide temporary works engineering for this monumental construction effort.

Engineering Challenges and Solutions

Temporary Works Design (TWD) and Coordination (TWC)

Our role in the Marston Box project involved detailed planning and execution:

  • Foundation Raft Construction: We designed all formwork support elements for the major foundation raft, ensuring stability and precision.
  • Splayed Abutment Walls: Three large support structures were constructed to hold the 1500mm deep bridge deck structure.

These elements required meticulous attention to detail and innovative engineering solutions to ensure successful completion.

The Bridge Launching Phase

After completing three significant casting phases of the main structure, we prepared for one of the most critical stages: launching the bridge. This phase involved moving the 12,000-ton structure incrementally over 400 meters to its final position within the M42 motorway corridor. The entire operation was executed over a weekend shutdown, minimizing disruption to traffic and demonstrating exceptional project management and coordination.

Teamwork and Execution

The success of the Marston Box project can be attributed to the energy and commitment of our resilient and experienced team. Despite facing numerous challenges, including tight deadlines and complex logistics, our team’s dedication ensured that every aspect of the project was executed flawlessly.

Conclusion: A Milestone in Infrastructure Development

The Marston Box project is a shining example of what can be achieved through innovative engineering and collaborative teamwork. By successfully delivering this critical infrastructure component for the HS2 rail network, we have contributed to enhancing transportation links across the Midlands. This project not only showcases our technical expertise but also highlights our ability to deliver large-scale projects safely and efficiently.
